Adam Klaasch was a merchant from Antwerp, who, most historians agree, thought that the "An-" at the beginning was just for decoration. He managed to get funding from Cardinal Richelieu and set off to found a colony in the New World. Arriving at Sanderling Bay, he cleverly decided to build his city in the swamp, which the natives said was haunted, and not in the fertile plains to either side of it, or the nearby mountains, with their clean water and abundant wildlife.

Maintaining his reputation for idiocy, he then proceeded to make the town dump on a riverbank immediately upriver from the town.
